Migrate Mail Data

Hi,

I am planning to re-setup my server and the only data I am not 100% on my process of migrating correctly is Mail. Can someone confirm is my process will work or needs tweaking?

Export Users from the Open Directory Server

  1. Open Server.app and select Users
  2. Click on the cog at the bottom of the window and select “Export Users…”
  3. Select Export: Local Network Users
  4. Select the name and location to store the export file

Copy Mail Data

  1. Mail Data is store in /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail
  2. Copy data to external location

On New Server Setup

Import Users from Users Export File

  1. Open Server.app and select Users
  2. Click on the cog at the bottom of the window and select “Import Users…”
  3. Change Directory to Local Network Directory and choose the export file and click Import

Copy Mail Data

  1. Copy mail data to /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail
  2. Open terminal and run sudo chown -R _dovecot /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail/

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), Server 5.0.15

Yes, that more or less covers it.

A few remarks:

-Make sure you copy the mail data using Terminal and not the Finder. copy -rp will do the job, maintaining permissions

-Whether you export local network or open directory users depends on where your mail users are located. They could be in either or both.

-Remember to export/import Groups as well if you have any.

-After importing users, you will need to re-assign passwords (Good moment to make sure everybody has a strong password).
